Why old Sinhala text needs converting

Before Sinhala Unicode became standard, most documents were typed in legacy fonts like FM Abhaya. These fonts don't actually store Sinhala — they store English letters and symbols, and the font simply draws Sinhala shapes on top. That's why old text turns into gibberish when the font isn't installed, and why it can't be searched or displayed on phones and websites.

This converter maps each FM Abhaya character back to its correct Sinhala Unicode letter — and handles the reordering legacy fonts need (some vowel signs are stored before their consonant but must come after it in Unicode). The result is clean, standard Sinhala Unicode you can paste anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

What is FM Abhaya and why convert it to Unicode?+

FM Abhaya is a popular legacy Sinhala font. Text typed in it is actually stored as English (ASCII) characters that only look Sinhala because of the font — so it won't display correctly on phones, websites, or other computers without that exact font installed. Converting to Sinhala Unicode makes the text display everywhere, stay searchable, and work in modern apps.

How do I use this converter?+

Open your old document (in Word, a PDF, or a web page) that uses the FM Abhaya font, copy the text, and paste it into the box on the left. The Sinhala Unicode version appears instantly on the right, ready to copy.

Is the conversion accurate?+

It uses an open-source FM Abhaya mapping validated against full-paragraph test cases, so everyday text converts accurately, including the vowel reordering that legacy fonts require. Very rare ligatures or text from a different legacy font may occasionally need a small manual touch-up.

Does it work for other legacy fonts like DL-Manel or Kandy?+

This tool is tuned for FM Abhaya, which is by far the most common legacy Sinhala font. Other fonts use different internal mappings, so results for them may not be accurate. Contact us if you need conversion for a specific font.

Is it free and private?+

Yes. It's completely free and runs entirely in your browser — your text is never uploaded or stored anywhere.
