How it works
Most transcription sites upload your recording to their servers and promise to delete it later. This one never sends it anywhere at all.
1. Add your audio
Drag and drop your file, or pick it from your device. Nothing is uploaded — the file is read locally.
2. Transcribe on your device
The Whisper AI model loads into your browser (once) and converts the speech to text right there on your hardware.
3. Copy or download
Read the transcript, toggle timestamps, then copy it or download it as a TXT file or SRT subtitles.
Supported audio & video formats
Anything your browser can decode — including WhatsApp voice notes (OPUS/OGG) and the audio track of video files.

Why in-browser transcription matters
Audio recordings are personal. A client consultation, a doctor's note, a private interview, a family voice message — none of it should have to be handed to a company you've never met just to get a transcript. Traditional online converters upload your file, process it on their servers, and ask you to trust their deletion policy.
This tool takes the opposite approach. It downloads OpenAI's Whisper — the open-source speech recognition model — into your browser, and runs it on your own device using WebGPU or WebAssembly. Your audio is never transmitted, which means there is nothing to leak, nothing to store, and no limit on how much you transcribe. It even works offline once the model is cached.
Frequently asked questions
Is this audio to text converter really free?
Yes — completely free, with no signup, no watermark, and no limit on how many files you transcribe. Because the transcription runs inside your own browser rather than on our servers, there are no per-minute costs to pass on to you.
Are my audio files uploaded anywhere?
It depends on the mode you choose. In Fast mode, your audio is sent over an encrypted connection to our server for quick transcription and is not stored afterwards. In Private mode, nothing is uploaded at all — the speech recognition model is downloaded into your browser and the audio is processed entirely on your device, so your recording never leaves your computer or phone. Pick whichever matters more to you: speed or full on-device privacy.
Which audio formats are supported?
MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, OPUS (including WhatsApp voice notes), FLAC, WEBM, MP4, 3GP, AMR and other formats your browser can decode. You can also transcribe the audio track of a video file such as MP4 or WEBM.
What languages can it transcribe?
It's powered by OpenAI's Whisper, which supports 90+ languages — including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Hindi, Tamil, Sinhala, Urdu, French, German, Chinese, Japanese and many more. Leave the language on auto-detect, or choose one for better accuracy. You can also translate the result into English.
How accurate is the transcription?
It uses OpenAI's Whisper, the industry-standard open-source speech recognition model, so accuracy is strong on clear recordings. The 'Accurate' model handles accents and background noise better than the 'Fast' one. As with any transcription, clear audio with minimal noise gives the best results, and it's always worth a quick proofread.
Why does it download something the first time?
The AI model itself (about 80 MB for Fast, 250 MB for Accurate) is downloaded into your browser on first use, then cached — so later transcriptions start instantly. That one-time download is what allows everything to run privately on your device.
How long does it take?
It depends on your device and the file length, since the work happens on your own hardware. Modern computers with WebGPU (Chrome or Edge) are fastest; older phones will be slower. Short voice notes are typically done in seconds, while an hour-long recording takes several minutes.
Can I get subtitles for a video?
Yes. Every transcription includes timestamps, so you can download an SRT subtitle file ready to load into YouTube, VLC, Premiere, or any video editor — or a plain TXT transcript with time markers.
